"GREAT BLUE HERON" WINS PRIDE OF SHOW!

The "Great Blue Heron" proudly carried a "Save Crow's Nest" placard and actually floated!

In the silliest event of 2004, “Save Crow’s Nest” made history on August 21 by winning “Pride of the Show” at the first annual Stafford County “Cardboard Boat Races” with its entry, the “Great Blue Heron.”  The event was held at the Aquia Landing, a stone’s throw away from Crow’s Nest.  The human crews of these boats made entirely of cardboard competed in various race categories by navigating around buoys.  Margaret Beckwith (age 14) and Robert Beckwith (age 9) (photo above) rowed the "Great Blue Heron" to a third place finish for the age 15 and under class. Tray Celestine (age 10) and his father Tom (age undisclosed!) made a gallant effort to run a second course in the parent/child race (photo below).  Alas, the “Great Blue Heron” then met its inevitable fate, collapsing into a soggy mess.  The crew survived the watery ordeal amidst much laughter.

A drizzle before the event required some plastic to keep the boat from getting wet . . . Wait, aren't boats supposed to get wet?

Proof of our unlikely victory!
